Hypnotherapy: what is it and what can you expect?

When people think of hypnosis, they often think of a TV show where someone does things they don't want to do. Hypnotherapy works very differently. You remain aware of what is happening and take control yourself. The therapist helps you enter a deeply relaxed state, in which you have easier access to feelings, habits, and beliefs.

What happens during hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation, similar to the moment just before you fall asleep or when you are completely absorbed in a book. In that state, you are more open to new ideas and images. The hypnotherapist uses this to work with you on a goal that you have agreed upon beforehand.

Where is hypnotherapy used?

Hypnotherapy is used for a wide range of conditions and goals, for example:

  • stop smoking or change other habits
  • tension, stress and worrying
  • anxiety, such as flying anxiety or fear of the dentist
  • sleep problems
  • support for chronic pain or trigger-type stomach complaints

How does a session run?

The first session is usually an initial assessment. You discuss what you want to achieve and what you can expect from hypnosis. In the subsequent sessions, the therapist guides you with voice and relaxation exercises into a hypnotic state. Often you receive recordings or exercises to practice at home. A course of treatment usually consists of several sessions.

What does the research say?

Research shows that hypnotherapy can help with conditions such as trigger-triggered migraines, pain and anxiety around medical procedures. The evidence is mixed for other complaints. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical care; if you have physical symptoms, have them first assessed by your GP.

Choosing a good hypnotherapist

The title of hypnotherapist is not protected. Therefore, pay attention to training, experience, and affiliation with a professional association. Reimbursement from the supplementary insurance is sometimes possible; check this in advance with your health insurer.
